Make a choice and take a chance

“The last two years have been intense. I had a baby, I started business school, I moved from New York City to Pennsylvania to start a new job at Vanguard. But when I think about it, I’m really happy. This has been the best career move and the way Vanguard supports its crew members to balance work and life has been amazing.”

Amrita's voyage to Vanguard

My name is Amrita, and I am Senior Execution Consultant for the US and Americas at Vanguard.

| was born and raised in Nepal. I came to the US in 2002 for school. Back in the day, there aren't many opportunities. There are a lot more opportunities now. But back then, there weren't many opportunities, especially for a woman. My parents did a really good job of sending me to a boarding school, which was not that common back in the day. But I am forever grateful for that because, you know, because they send me to a really good school. And I was able to apply to schools in the US and come here.

I've always been very good at quantitative subjects like math and physics. And my senior year, I got real interested in trading and investment management. So I was looking for a job and a career where I could use my quantitative skills on a daily basis and finance seemed like a great fit.

The last two years have been intense. I had a baby, I started business school, I moved from New York City to Pennsylvania to start a new job at Vanguard. But when I think about it, I'm really happy. This has been the best career move and the way Vanguard supports its crew members to balance work and life has been amazing. The support I get from my team, from my workplace, and from the management, it's amazing. I never come in the morning worried, you know, if I get a call or if I have to leave work to run an errand, it's never been a challenge. That's what you get at Vanguard. There's no questions asked. You need to go take care of your daughter. You know, you have your priorities set. And they completely support that. So that's the kind of understanding and support you get to balance your work and life.

And the other most important thing is not to, you know, not to worry about asking for help. You know, my parents were here when my daughter was born, when I started my business school, and they were here when I first moved to Vanguard. My husband, and I don't even know where to start about him, he's been the biggest support I've ever needed. And not only does he support me, he also encourages me to pursue everything I've ever wanted to do. And lastly, my daughter. I mean, she's my biggest inspiration. You know, when I look at her, I know I can do anything.

Three things, right, that I try to live by. You know, you have to make a choice, take a chance, if you want anything to change in your life, you know. I made a choice to go to business school after my daughter was born. I took a chance coming to Vanguard and I feel like my life and career has forever changed.
