Millions of everyday investors trust Vanguard because they understand and value the company’s commitment to giving them the best chance for investment success. Vanguard is also differentiated by adhering to a simple but effective communication approach—being a clear, credible, and candid voice in the industry. We are currently seeking a strong, confident communicator with PR experience to protect and enhance Vanguard's image and reputation around the globe.

As a PR Specialist, you’ll serve as one of Vanguard’s spokespersons—responding promptly and resourcefully to daily inquiries from print, broadcast, and digital media to: promote Vanguard funds, services, and research; advocate on issues of importance to clients; and express Vanguard’s viewpoints. You will help develop and deliver responses to breaking market news, regulatory changes, industry developments, and trends impacting Vanguard as an employer and investment provider. By forming and cultivating strong relationships with members of the news media, you’ll reinforce Vanguard’s role as a respected thought leader, employer-of-choice and, most importantly, caretaker of our clients’ investments.

In this role, you will:

  • Prepare strategic plans, contribute to coverage and activity reports, train and prepare executives for media engagements, and serve as a counselor to internal partners, in conjunction with the Public Relations Manager. There will also be opportunities to put your strong writing and critical thinking skills to use by developing content, from pitches to press releases.
  • Respond promptly to daily inquiries from the news media—including wire services, bloggers, financial websites, newspapers, and personal finance/business publications—and act as an accessible, responsive, credible, quotable, and resourceful spokesperson. Handle incoming calls in a timely manner and provide clear, candid, and accurate statements and/or background information to the media. Employ persuasion and influence skills effectively to: 1)maintain Vanguard's image and reputation among media and shareholders;  2)promote Vanguard's funds and services; 3) advance Vanguard's business and communication goals.
  • Develop and strengthen working relationships with members of the news media, as well as identify and cultivate new press contacts. Maintain regular contact with reporters and editors via phone, e-mail, and face-to-face meetings and visits. Plan and research story ideas to proactively pitch to media representatives. Arrange interviews with executives, ambassadors, and portfolio managers, and fully prepare both Vanguard’s ambassadors and media members for press engagements.
  • Develop and maintain effective, strong, collaborative relationships with team members, internal business clients, investment management personnel, marketing colleagues, ambassadors, members of senior staff, as well as external advisors, vendors, and clients, in order to develop, plan, and execute media activities.
  • Interact on a regular basis with business clients, marketing partners, and senior staff to understand Vanguard’s strategy, priorities, and positioning. Develop specific plans to obtain positive media coverage of broad corporate priorities or specific business and marketing initiatives.
  • Provide sound and reasoned counsel to management and business clients on public perception and business issues. Identify media issues and develop strategies and tactics for obtaining positive media coverage and mitigating adverse publicity.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, market activity, and regulatory changes and develop appropriate responses.
  • Research and prepare press releases and other press materials, including statements, Q&As, backgrounders, pitches, fact sheets, press kits, bylined articles, and other materials that are highly professional, effective, creative, and accurate.

What it takes:

  • Undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, PR or related area of study required. Graduate degree in communications or business preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of PR experience, either at an agency or in-house required. Seven-10 years of PR experience in the mutual fund or investment industry preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently on multiple projects.
  • Proven ability to explain complex subject matter in plain English.
  • Knowledge of financial services industry, particularly mutual fund investing and financial markets.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with various departments and levels of management including senior executives.
  • Ability to write quickly and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to "cover" corporate events outside usual business hours.
