Research and Implement Systematic Equity Strategies

Vanguard’s Quantitative Equity Group (QEG) manages four distinct strategies which include Traditional Alpha, Managed Payout, Factor Investing and Liquid Alternatives with a current AUM of ~ 38B across 45 mandates. We are currently seeking an individual for a Senior Portfolio Manager, Non U.S. Equity who will perform quantitative equity research and manage active equity portfolios as well as develop and enhance the quantitative investment product and portfolio management process. In this role you will manage research projects, conduct research on developing quantitative investment models, utilize portfolio construction methodology and data management tools as well as deliver ongoing research analysis through back-testing investment strategies and portfolio simulations.

In this role you will:

  • Uses knowledge of investment products, investment principles, portfolio management and risk management to lead all aspects of active equity portfolios
  • Leads and conducts research on developing quantitative investment models and portfolio construction methodology. Initiates and analyzes complex investment research topics and methodology issues by utilizing both internal and external resources
  • Initiates quantitative and qualitative analysis on investment strategy and product design topics. Offers opinions and recommendations to improve portfolio management process, quantitative models and trading effectiveness
  • Understands relevant regulatory requirements for each assigned portfolio, including portfolios with an oversight role. Regulations can be from different countries, depending on mandates
  • Participates in the ongoing firm wide discussion on development and enhancement of Vanguard’s quantitative investment products. Performs analyses on methodology/approach and makes recommendations on developing new products
  • Delivers presentations and investment reviews for internal and external clients
  • Provides client services with QEG’s investment process for external clients and consultant Relations team as needed
  • Leads group discussions designed to identify and debate investment issues and potential research projects
  • Provides guidance, mentorship, training, and motivation as necessary to develop junior analysts
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned

What it takes:

  • Ph.D. and/or applicable Master’s degree. CFA preferred
  • Minimum of ten years of investment experience with at least five years in quantitative equity research/portfolio management role
  • Consistent track record of researching and delivering effective strategies with strong performance in active equity mandates
  • Extraordinary strategic and critical thinking skills
  • Exceptionally strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Proficient computer programming skills, including broad knowledge of database and software packages (e.g., Compustat, Worldscope, I/B/E/S, SAS, MATLAB, Python)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to articulate complex investment topics to variety of audiences
  • Strong relationship management skills
