Starting as a client relationship associate, Rachel W. built the skills, confidence, and experience that helped her grow into a high-net-worth client case representative at Vanguard.

Growth often comes from building on each experience. For Rachel W., that meant starting as a client relationship associate (CRA) and developing the skills that helped her advance to a senior associate role supporting high-net-worth clients. Read about her journey, the skills she developed along the way, and the experiences that helped her prepare for new opportunities.

The experiences that shaped my next step

Helping clients every day gives me insight into the many situations they may face, while also allowing me to represent Vanguard and the values we stand for. Every client’s situation is unique, and those are often the moments when clients need us the most.

Stepping in to advocate for clients and serving as their single point of contact is what I found most rewarding, which ultimately led me to pursue my current role as a high-net-worth client case representative.

Several things helped me grow and prepare for this promotion from CRA to high-net-worth client case representative, including gaining experience through daily client interactions, seeking feedback, and taking advantage of development opportunities. Working with a wide variety of client situations helped build my confidence, strengthen my problem-solving skills, and expand my knowledge.

I also benefited from the support of my leaders and peers, who were always willing to share their expertise and provide guidance. Most importantly, I challenged myself to step outside of my comfort zone, take on new responsibilities, and continuously look for ways to improve both personally and professionally.

Investing in my development

Vanguard provided many resources that helped set me up for success while preparing for the Series 7 and Series 63. Between the study materials, instructors, and dedicated study time, I truly felt that Vanguard was invested in helping me succeed.

The exams were challenging and required a significant commitment, but having those resources readily available made the process much more manageable. Knowing that Vanguard was supporting me every step of the way motivated me to put in the effort, stay focused, and do my best throughout the process. Passing the exams was a rewarding milestone and an important step in my career development.

Four habits that helped me prepare for my exams

Here are four practices that were especially important to my success:

  • Dedication: It’s important to take full advantage of the study materials and time provided to set yourself up for success.
  • Collaboration: Collaborating with peers can be incredibly valuable because it allows you to discuss concepts, share different perspectives, and learn things you may not have considered on your own.
  • Note-taking: I was a big note-taker because writing information in my own words helped me better understand and retain the material.
  • Practice: Lastly, practice, practice, practice! Repetition provides exposure to a wide variety of questions, builds confidence, and helps you learn how to effectively navigate a lengthy exam within the allotted time.

The value of putting clients first

My biggest strength has been keeping clients at the center of my work. I show up to work each day focused on being the best version of myself and representing Vanguard in a way that reflects our values.

Having a client-first mindset has helped me build strong relationships, communicate effectively, and navigate complex situations with confidence. It has also encouraged me to continuously learn and expand my knowledge so I can provide the best possible support to clients.

Whether serving clients as a client relationship associate or now as a high-net-worth client case representative, putting clients’ needs first has helped me grow my skills, earn trust, and contribute to positive outcomes for both clients and Vanguard.

Advice for growing your career at Vanguard

I’ve learned that growth at Vanguard comes from being willing to step outside of your comfort zone, trust your voice, and stay true to who you are.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of speaking up and advocating for your clients when it’s the right thing to do. Early in my career, I was sometimes hesitant to share my perspective, but I learned that standing up for clients and doing what is right does not go unnoticed.

I would also encourage people to be their authentic selves. Building genuine relationships, staying true to your values, and focusing on making a positive impact for clients can go a long way. If you remain dedicated to learning and growing, Vanguard provides many opportunities to build a rewarding career.
