For Kenneth D., joining the Vanguard crew less than a year ago marked the beginning of a meaningful new chapter. As a client relationship associate and a participant in the Investments Apprenticeship, Kenneth is embracing Vanguard’s mission through both his day-to-day work and the connections he builds with clients. Below, Kenneth shares what his journey has looked like so far in his role.

Where problem-solving meets purpose

My favorite thing about working at Vanguard is the unpredictability that comes with answering each phone call. You can get a general sense of what a client may need based on the department they’re calling, but you never truly know what a call will entail—and that’s exhilarating.

You might think you’re helping with a simple transaction, but the emotional depth and vulnerability clients share can be astounding. Delivering the best client experience means truly listening to what a client needs and then providing thoughtful solutions to their problems. I also understand how complicated and overwhelming investments can be for clients. Being able to combine knowledge, problem-solving, and service is genuinely fulfilling.

You never know who you’ll be speaking with, what their background is, or the context of their situation. Many times, you have to think on the fly to solve clients’ problems and, hopefully, make their day a little better.

Becoming a trusted partner for clients

What surprised me most in my career journey is how often I’ve become a confidant for clients while helping them with important transactions. Many of the clients who call me are senior citizens, and as technology advances rapidly and new systems are implemented, many seniors are unfortunately being left behind. This includes tasks that may seem simple, like adding a bank account or accessing an online account.

What truly stays with me are moments when these clients confide in me that they want to ensure their family will be taken care of after they pass. This often involves taking extra steps—changing funds, setting beneficiaries, asking about tax liabilities—and it’s genuinely an honor to help them through those decisions. These experiences have shaped the way I approach my work.

A moment that sticks with me

One moment that has stayed with me involved a 93-year-old woman who wanted to ensure her daughter would be taken care of by liquidating her accounts so the money would be immediately accessible.

While helping her, I noticed there was a negative balance from an account maintenance fee that needed to be resolved before we could move forward. Because she didn’t have a bank account on file, I gave her the option to sell shares to cover the balance. Rather than having her call back later, I followed up personally once the funds settled and completed the liquidation for her.

She was so excited to hear from me and thanked me sincerely. She shared that she had never experienced service like that—but also told me that she had always believed Vanguard hired good people. That interaction honestly made my day. She was someone who had seen the world and shared incredible insights about life—how to make the best of it and not take things too seriously.

That moment stays with me and often puts a smile on my face, especially on tougher days.

Finding community and belonging

From the moment I stepped on Vanguard’s campus, fellow crew members have been welcoming and supportive every step of the way. Of course, there have been hard days, but the community I’ve built here has always encouraged me to pick my head back up and keep going. I’ve found a sense of belonging through crew groups like OPEN, Black Organization for Leadership and Dialogue (BOLD), and Accessibility, Belonging, Leadership, and Empowerment (ABLE). These groups have helped shape the professional I am today.

This is also the first job where I’ve been able to be open as a disabled transgender person of color—not just accepted, but celebrated for my differences. This response helped me understand that Vanguard truly means it when the company says it’s for the people. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to see how much more I’ll grow here.
