Learning, leading, evolving: Ralph B.’s 45+ years at Vanguard

Headshot of Ann D.

Learn how Ralph B. dedicated over four decades to Vanguard, building a career that spanned the entire evolution of modern financial services technology.

Ralph B. started at Vanguard in September 1980, just five years after the firm’s founding. He has spent 45 years in Information Technology (IT) at Vanguard—designing, building, and supporting systems in every business division.

From the introduction of personal computers, the internet—and now the emergence of AI—Ralph has been part of it all. Explore Ralph’s extensive career and see how he has grown alongside Vanguard.

Growing alongside Vanguard

When I started at Vanguard in September 1980, Vanguard was a new and growing company. As Vanguard continued to expand, they were beginning to leverage more of the “new” technology of the 1980s into their day-to-day operations. I’ve worked across every major Vanguard business division and supported multiple generations of platforms. I truly grew up alongside Vanguard.

Since Vanguard was a young company, it had very little—if any—legacy technology when I started. It was a great place to learn about new tech. From pre-personal computer (PC) mainframe environments to today’s data, analytics, and AI-driven systems—I’ve seen it all during my time here.

Embracing a learner’s mindset

I always tell new crew members at Vanguard that a career here is not about what you know—it’s about what you’re willing to learn.

Vanguard is a place to grow. No matter the role, you need to come in ready to learn.

Especially when it comes to technology, anything new or different is often met with skepticism. When Vanguard’s website first launched, embracing the web felt much like the way we’re approaching AI today.

When you stay focused on what’s best for the Vanguard client, moving forward doesn’t feel as risky as it might seem. By collaborating with others, talking things through and weighing the benefits against the risks, you can make decisions with more confidence.

What defines the work at Vanguard

Throughout my career at Vanguard, every CEO who came after Mr. Bogle reinforced the same belief: without a dedicated crew, Vanguard would not be successful. Mr. Bogle’s message of servant leadership continues to shape how we work today.

I’ve seen that belief reflected in many moments throughout my time at Vanguard—many of which I am especially proud of.

Early on, I was part of the team that built the first client database for the Retail business, now known as Personal Wealth. That team also developed Vanguard’s first relational database, which gave us a better understanding of our clients and how we serve them.

Later in my career, I had the opportunity to represent Vanguard IT at the IBM Silicon Valley Labs, where I presented Vanguard’s use of IBM’s DB2 technology to a global audience of DB2 development teams.

I also served as chair of the IT Peer Recognition Award—helping highlight the contributions of others across the organization, something that meant a great deal to me.

One of the most meaningful projects I led was the re-engineering of Vanguard’s mainframe platform. Over four years, we moved from a siloed, non-shared environment to a fully integrated system. The effort included a major milestone—working with senior leaders to coordinate a full weekend shutdown of the Vanguard Account website so we could complete the transition.

What made this project stand out was the collaboration across IT. It took a dedicated group of people, especially our system engineers, whose commitment made a complex transformation feel seamless. Moments like this define how we work at Vanguard.

Sharing what I’ve learned

Being a mentor to crew members and watching their careers grow and thrive at Vanguard is something I’m especially proud of.

One thing about Vanguard’s culture that keeps me excited to come back each day is the consistency of the message that we all work toward: doing what’s best for the Vanguard client. The company is evolving every day, and they invite crew along on that journey.

There are endless opportunities to learn and grow in any role. If you want to evolve your career over time, Vanguard is a place where growth isn’t just encouraged, it’s ingrained into the DNA of how we work every day.
