With a deep passion for client service and hospitality, I originally envisioned a career in the resort industry in Phoenix. I never imagined that my skill set could thrive in the world of finance.

During my senior year at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, I was determined to find a company where I could make a lasting impact. That’s when I found Vanguard at our campus career fair. Vanguard stood out as one of the most sought-after employers among my peers. Still, I hesitated to approach the recruiter, convinced I already knew the path I wanted to take. That’s when I told myself, “It wouldn’t hurt to learn more.”

Little did I know that simple conversation with the recruiter would change everything.

Starting from scratch

After going through the interview process and accepting a role as a client relationship associate in 2019, I quickly realized how little I knew about what the job would entail.

With no background in finance, I faced steep challenges: Licensing exams, unfamiliar technology, and the pressure of speaking confidently with clients. There were moments when I wanted to give up—but I also knew that I owed it to myself to stay committed and see how far I could go. Thankfully, I did.

Finding my footing

Day by day, things began to shift. I started looking forward to work. My conversations with clients became smoother, I anticipated their needs, and I began supporting my teammates with their questions. I felt confident. I had momentum.

That momentum led me to a role as a training and development coordinator, where I found my passion in mentoring new hires.

Helping others navigate the discomfort of starting out—especially those like me without a traditional finance background—became my purpose. I loved being the person they could lean on, the one who supported their growth into confident client representatives.

Cultivating a space to grow

Recognizing the impact that we have on one another as a team at Vanguard, I felt called to leadership. Today, as a new hire team leader, I’m often the first face our new hires meet. I take that responsibility seriously.

I guide these new hires through the licensing process, help them understand expectations, and support them through the challenges of starting a new role. The influence we have as leaders can shape their mindset, their confidence, and their success.

If it weren’t for the support system I leaned on—those who encouraged me to embrace the hardship and not let fear or anxiety define my journey—I wouldn’t be here today.

My perseverance through those early challenges is exactly why I knew I wanted to return to this space as a leader. It’s a full-circle moment, and my goal is to always lead with intention and create an experience that’s as impactful as the one I had.

Support systems behind success

None of this would have been possible without the incredible mentors who believed in me—from when I was a nervous college graduate unsure of her path, to the confident professional I am today.

If there is one thing I learned in my six years at Vanguard, it’s to never give up on yourself when it gets hard. Just when I thought my journey was ending, a mindset shift propelled me into new opportunities.

I’ve built a strong community of people I trust for insight, perspective, and advice. Staying hungry and open-minded has helped me appreciate every accomplishment.

I want to say thank you to Aubrey G., Carlos R., Kendra L., Rozlind F., Trent S., Audrey B., Annsley R., and Matt L.—your influence has shaped my Vanguard journey in ways I’ll never forget.
