Beginning at Vanguard in 2020, Candy Z., an active credit high yield investment analyst, has spent her time learning from mentors and discovering what it takes to continue to grow in the investment world. Along the way, she’s picked up a handful of meaningful lessons and memorable moments that are continuing to shape her career journey so far.

Building my career through shared learning

I started my career at Vanguard through the Investment Management Development Program (IMDP). The rotational structure gave me broad exposure to stakeholders across the investment management ecosystem and helped me build a valuable foundation of skills. It also deepened my appreciation for Vanguard’s culture of sharing expertise and learning from one another.

Seeing investing differently over time

One thing that surprised me is how much investing is about judgment and synthesis—not solely crunching data and building models. I’ve learned that real value comes from connecting different pieces of information, being grounded in rationality when facing uncertainty, and using thoughtful discussions to pressure-test investment ideas.

When my work truly hit close to home

When I reflect on my career so far, one moment that stands out was completing my first trade involving the financing for the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It quite literally hit close to home as I drive on the Turnpike frequently myself. The experience reminds me that our work supports the development and maintenance of infrastructure, products, and services that people rely on every day.

Giving back along the way

Beyond my day-to-day responsibilities, I stay involved with Girls Who Invest, where I share my experiences with students exploring careers in this field. I also support the Women’s Initiative for Leadership Success (WILS), an internal community at Vanguard, by volunteering for various events. I’m grateful for the guidance I’ve received and value these opportunities to pay it forward.
